Arula Black Jeans

★★★★★4.8· verified reviews

We built our black jeans for people who need one pair that works everywhere. Crafted from 12.5-ounce Japanese selvedge denim, these jeans hold their shape through long days without feeling stiff or restrictive.

The deep black shade stays true wash after wash, thanks to a reactive dye process that bonds pigment directly to the cotton fiber. Our slim-straight cut sits comfortably at the waist and tapers gently from knee to ankle, giving you a clean line that pairs as well with boots as it does with sneakers.

Each pair is sewn in our Los Angeles workshop using reinforced bartack stitching at stress points. We chose corozo buttons and copper rivets because they won’t corrode or tarnish over time. The result is a jean that gets better as it breaks in, developing subtle fades that tell your story without losing its original character.

What the numbers mean

We source our denim from Kuroki Mills in Okayama, Japan—a family-run mill weaving selvedge fabric on vintage shuttle looms since 1950. The 12.5-ounce weight strikes a balance between durability and comfort, dense enough to resist abrasion yet breathable for year-round wear.

Reactive dyeing saturates each fiber rather than coating the surface, so the color won’t rub off on light upholstery or crack at the creases. Triple-needle felled seams along the outseam and inseam add strength where friction happens most. Every stitch is locked with a bartack at the pocket corners, belt loops, and fly, creating anchor points that distribute tension across the fabric instead of relying on a single thread.

Our black jeans use a true-to-size waist measurement with no vanity sizing. If you normally wear a 32-inch waist, order a 32. The slim-straight cut provides room through the seat and thigh while tapering from the knee down to a 15-inch leg opening, creating a streamlined silhouette that doesn’t cling.

We recommend sizing up one if you prefer extra room in the top block, since selvedge denim offers minimal stretch compared to blended fabrics. The inseam ships unhemmed at 32 inches, giving you the option to cuff or hem to your preferred break. For guidance on taking accurate measurements at home, our measurement tutorial walks through each step with photos.

We built these jeans to improve with age, not degrade. Turn them inside out before washing to minimize friction on the face of the fabric, and use cold water with a mild detergent free of optical brighteners. Tumble dry on low heat or hang to air dry—high heat can shrink cotton and weaken elastic fibers over time.

You’ll notice subtle fading at natural wear points after a few months of regular use: whiskers at the hips, honeycombs behind the knees, and lightening along the seams. This patina is intentional. The reactive dye holds fast to the fiber core, so the black won’t turn gray or purple even after dozens of washes. Repairs are simple: bring any Arula denim to our LA workshop for complimentary bartack reinforcement or patching within the first two years of ownership.

What’s Included

Each pair of Arula black jeans ships in a reusable cotton drawstring bag with a care card printed on recycled paper. The care card includes wash instructions, our workshop address for future repairs, and a QR code linking to our digital fit guide.

You’ll also find a small fabric swatch attached to the interior waistband—useful for testing stain treatments or matching thread color if you decide to hem or alter the jeans yourself. We don’t include branded hang tags or plastic fasteners; the selvedge ID on the outseam and our woven label inside the waistband are the only branding elements.

Finally, black jeans that stay black
I’ve owned these for eight months and they still look brand new. The color hasn’t faded to that washed-out charcoal you get with cheaper denim. Fit is spot-on if you follow their sizing guide.

Worth every penny
These are my third pair from Arula. The selvedge holds up way better than stretch blends, and I love that they’re made locally instead of overseas. I wear them three days a week and they’re still going strong.

Best fit I’ve found
I’m 6’1″ with a 33-inch waist and these fit perfectly. Not too tight in the thighs, not too loose at the ankle. The unhemmed inseam was long enough to cuff twice without looking bunched.

Great quality, needs break-in time
The denim is stiff out of the box, so plan on a week or two before they soften up. Once broken in, they’re incredibly comfortable and the construction is flawless. I appreciate the reinforced stitching at the pockets.

Holds shape all day
I wear these to the office and they still look crisp by the end of the day. No sagging or bagging at the knees like my old jeans. The mid-rise is comfortable without being too high.

Sleek and versatile
These work with everything in my closet. Dress them up with a blazer or wear them with a hoodie on the weekend. The black is deep and true, exactly what I was hoping for.

Questions About Arula Black Jeans

The reactive dye process we use bonds pigment directly to the cotton fiber, so the black stays deep and true even after repeated washing. You’ll see subtle wear patterns develop at natural crease points over time, but the overall color won’t shift to gray or purple like surface-dyed denim. Wash cold and tumble dry low to maintain the original shade.

No, our black jeans are 100% cotton selvedge with no elastane or spandex. The fabric will relax slightly with wear and conform to your body, but it won’t snap back the way stretch denim does. If you prefer jeans with built-in give, consider our stretch black jeans, which blend 2% elastane for added mobility.

We use true waist measurements with no vanity sizing, so order your actual waist size. The slim-straight cut provides room through the seat and thigh, tapering from knee to ankle. If you’re between sizes or prefer extra room in the top block, size up one. The inseam ships unhemmed at 32 inches, allowing you to customize the length.

Yes, the selvedge construction makes hemming straightforward. Use a heavy-duty needle on your machine and match the thread to the existing topstitching color. If you prefer a professional finish, any tailor familiar with denim can hem them, or bring them to our Los Angeles workshop for complimentary hemming within the first two years of ownership.

Selvedge denim is woven on narrow shuttle looms that produce a self-finished edge, visible as the clean white line along the outseam when you cuff the jeans. This construction method creates a tighter, more durable fabric compared to wide-loom denim, which requires an overlocked edge to prevent fraying. Selvedge also tends to age more gracefully, developing character over time.

Our black jeans are sanforized, meaning the fabric has been pre-shrunk before cutting and sewing. You can expect minimal shrinkage after the first wash—about 1% in length and width. This stability makes sizing predictable and eliminates the need for a long initial soak like you’d do with unsanforized raw denim.

Wash them when they’re visibly soiled or after 10-15 wears, whichever comes first. Overwashing can fade any denim prematurely, but our reactive dye holds up well to regular laundering. If you need to refresh them between washes, air them out or spot-clean stains with a damp cloth.
